The month of Qur’an has now returned
How much in the past year have we learned?
How many rewards could we have earned?
If only its pages we had turned!
Here it is already another year
A chance for redemption and perhaps get near
To Allah, the Greatest, who will become most dear
If we really commit and are sincere
He is our Creator, the one Most High
To whom we shall return when we all die
He does not expect perfection, just that we try
To read and practice what we testify
That besides Him we shall worship no other
Not wife, nor child, not dad or mother
No relative, ancestor, sister or brother
And definitely not one another
As human beings we are finite
We flip and flop on wrong or right
For petty issues we’ll start a fight
And may choose darkness over light
We need the One who gives, not takes
Who wipes out even big mistakes
For He knows our deepest heartbreaks
He separates true ones from the fakes
He makes it easy to return
If we just take the time to learn
For proper deeds rewards we earn
But right and wrong we must discern
From dawn to dusk we do the fast
In hopes the changes made will last
The life we lived is time now passed
The life ahead is far more vast
There are just days left in this life
Days sometimes rife with pain and strife
Even between husband and wife
Sometimes mere words cut like a knife
Our state can go from up to down
Today the king, the next the clown
Tomorrow one could earn renown
And due to fame, they later drown
The fast reminds us of the thing
That having things just cannot bring
In fact, those things to which we cling
The “bling” just brings us suffering
It’s inner peace and peace of mind
That’s what through fasting we can find
When done with purpose, not just blind
Through it we can be redefined
What is the fast if we don’t reflect?
How can it help us reconnect?
The heart is what it should affect
And we’ll see the effect if we ‘come correct’
Seek knowledge not just for information
But to bring about a transformation
Within us and the Muslim nation
In the life to come to raise our station
Ramadhan for many is quite the test
Not as much sleep and much less rest
Some are oppressed and over stressed
But hold on tight and we’ll all be blessed
30 days of saum, qiyaam 30 nights
All of that and more don’t fulfill the rights
That Allah is due nor equals those delights
Upon which those fasting have set their sights
Laylatul-Qadr in the last ten
Earns worship worth the life span beyond most men
Forgiveness awaits those who stand within
With the hope to do it all again
Thus when you stand up for the prayer
You are not there just breathing air
But standing cause you are aware
Of great rewards for those who care
For sure some days we will fall short
Some fasts we may have to abort
For illness, travel or excuse of some sort
So for this we have good news to report
By giving Zakatul-Fitr we can succeed
In erasing any trace of greed
Providing food for those in need
And then we’re freed on the Day of Eid
My hope was in the time I took
With bait of rhyme you bit the hook
So now you feel the urge to look
More deeply into Allah’s Book
